I like your site. You have interesting upgrades made to your equipment. By the way, do you use computer simulation for your designs?
(Machmat: Yes, all circuits are simulated in Microcap simulation software, power supplies in Duncan amps PSUD simulation software. After designing they are measured thoroughly, and then optimized in sound by trying out different components and small variations in values. After optimizations they must run continuously for a month minimum. Most of the time they also get build by someone else, to see if everything is right. Only when they pass all these tests they get available as a DIY kit.).
Best regards Thomas

Why, oh why do designers like to put vacuum tubes in tube grinder circuits? I like to max out the MTBF (mean time between failures) by letting the tubes in all stages just "loaf" at reduced power. A conservatively-rated hi fi amplifier can be made to sound like a rotary spark gap if a stage of unity gain waveform modification is added, like a (12AX7), biased to Class B or C, in a differentiating circuit with some degree of grid leak bias, along with cathode bias. Play around with values a little, running the (12AX7) at 100v and low current on the plates. The amp. will sound like it's on fire, but the tubes will last for years. Especially if you're running some decent sized bottles in the PA stage, like the 6CA7, 6550 or 6146's. If you think the tubes themselves have a characteristic "sound," forget it. You're really hearing the sound of distortion.
(Machmat: Of course, harmonics determine the sound of anything, for example the difference between instruments. Distortion always comes in harmonics, and thus they determine the typical sound of a specific tube in a specific application. This is a combination of the distortion of the tube in the circuit (most important), but also of the tube itself).
Tubes from a different lot or a different manufacturer will have differing transconductances, operating points, and idling currents in a given circuit- changing the distortion mode and the particular sound. Duh!
(Machmat: Then why do tubes of the same brand (even same lot) with characteristics changing typical over almost 100%, still have the same typical sound? I think you should reconsider your opinion. Personally I think typical sound of a brand can be found in geometrics, used materials, tolerances and typical vibrations)

neem nou het advies dat ie me gaf om een zilver mica als koppel C in de voortrap te doen, mensen daar kan voor mij geen Auricap tegenop

Also, am interested re your comments about the MM/MC cartridge choice?

I agree with most visitors about the quality of the site:
Good Job.
Today I had the opportunity to get 2 altec 421s. One of them has a 'sticky' coil. It makes scrachty noises when being pushed. The Owner said it happened when they fall down.
They were used as a PA system before and they have an Alu dustcap and a white cage.
Anybody knows if the can be 'recentered'?
Any advice warmly welcome.
Thanks
Thomas

this is an excellent site for eary surfing and the wealth of info it contains. i really appreciate the time you have taken to put this together and keep it updated.
having learnt electronics circuits inthe early 60's when tubes were predominant i can appreciate the nostalgia that we hold for these devices. but sadly the transistor and ic's have taken away this knowledge bit by bit.
now it is difficult to find tube enthusiasts in my country who can share experiences together.
sites like yours help us to recollect and associate with the past.
keep up the great work.
thank you

When I left school in the mid 60's I worked in a hifi retail shop and sold amps like the leak you could tell then that the quality was beyond reproach the best sound i have ever heard was from a pair of TL50,s great nice to see the dsigns again in 68 i had a customer who complained that the recifier in his TL 10 had failed it had been in use for 21 years ! Golden memories!!

Your "unknown" schematic featuring 6BQ7, 12B4A, PP 812A should be credited to David O'Rourke, who published the design in an excellent article in the Feb 95 issue of Glass Audio. This great article summarizes David's evaluation of output and driver tube choices. Highly recommended.
